Course Outline

Course Title: Reimagining Learning & Development: Applying an Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Lens 


Duration: 3-day course


Course Delivery Options: Virtual Instructor-led (Synchronous); Hybrid (Self-paced & Synchronous); or In-person (TBD)


Course enrollment: Limited number of learners (4-8 learners)


Learning Platforms: Tomee Sojourner Innovation & Learning Institute Portal and Zoom 


Intended Audience: All learners must have at least 5+ years current experience in one or more of the following roles:

  • Learning and Development Professionals 

  • Current Education Labour Relations Officers with extensive facilitation, training and instructor experience 

  • In-house Course Instructors 

  • Current Labour Relations Facilitators


Course Description: 

In recent years, there have been growing requests from organizations and learners for Learning & Development professionals to integrate more inclusive content, improve learner safety and accessibility, address biases, and navigate increasingly challenging discussions.


This course offers experienced L & D professionals innovative and creative ways to apply an anti-racism and anti-oppression lens to their practice. In the course, learners will move through small group activities, group discussions, instructor-led presentations, individual projects, instructor-led feedback, real-life scenarios, self-assessments, self-reflection activities, storytelling and content development. Learners will also receive guidance, feedback and one-on-one support from the course instructor.


As part of this course, learners will be encouraged to share their insights, expertise, knowledge, practices and processes.


Course Outcomes:

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Navigate challenging conversations and interactions

  • Develop different ways to integrate Tomee Sojourner Consulting’s ARAO LensTM into their practice

  • Design, develop, and deliver an ARAO-related activity or module

  • Use group interaction guidelines to set the tone and manage expectations;

  • Understand the impact of power, privilege, and marginalization on:

    • The instructor/facilitator/trainer’s professional journey

    • The adult learner’s experiences

    • The adult learner and instructor’s interpersonal relationship

    • The co-facilitator/co-instructor relationship the learner experience

  • Consider how ARAO-related issues impact the learner and instructor's interpersonal relationship 

  • Adjust their content delivery and facilitation styles

  • Integrate learner safety and accessibility resources into their courses

  • Identify innovative ways to challenge learner and facilitator/instructor/trainer biases
